My Skin Art Collection

Dear Mocha

Today marks the first day in a week of tattoo themed posts. This is something we've (and by we I mean me and Mocha) talked about recently. This year my little sister will officially be not so little anymore. Mocha will be eighteen. 18. Which is the legal age for getting a tattoo.  It also happens to be the age I got my first tattoo. I am very much a fan of tattoos. I'm all for a permanent expression of art on your skin. I'll get more into that later. So to kick this week off I'm going to show you my 5 tattoos and an explanation of why I got them. So here is my tattoos story.

First tattoo I ever got was a sacred heart on the top of my left arm.
Yup that's 18 year old me in 2009 really stoked about my first tattoo.
I got this and every tattoo I've ever gotten at Trinity Tattoo Company in South Carolina. At the time I worked there on the weekends. It's a safe, clean, and enjoyable place to get tattooed. Not to mention the owners are pretty awesome. I got it on the top of my arm because of two reasons.
1) It was a place that could be easily hidden or easily shown which ever is appropriate.
2) It's a good first place as far as pain level. All tattoos hurt if someone says it doesn't they are lying. The arm however isn't as bad as most places.
And last but not least what is it and what does it mean to me. I am a christian and sacred heart is a christian symbol. I wanted my first tattoo to be something that means a lot to me  and my faith means everything to me. I didn't want something that was corny or over done. I wanted it to me simple and to the point. What my sacred heart means to me, is the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Simple and black and grey. I found the design in the tattoo shop and re-drew it and I got what I drew tattooed on me.

Next tattoo wasn't actually a "new" tattoo it was an addition to the first one.
Here is a picture of it today.

After I got my first tattoo I immediately wanted more. And after working in a tattoo shop and seeing so many big and beautiful tattoos and a couple comments about me looking like Tila Tequila (who has a heart on her arm) I had to add to my current one. So in the fall of 2010 I added to my sacred heart. I love traditional tattoos and I really like traditional roses. I looked at a lot of sacred hearts designs and drew what I wanted added on based on what I liked from others. Me and the tattoo artist worked together to come up with the finished design. I went from a very simple sacred heart to and very unique sacred heart. I am very satisfied with this tattoo. Still to this day, 4 years later, I still get complements from people saying they cant believe how long Ive had it.

Ok here is officially tattoo number 2

This is a crown of Charlotte. Where I currently live and it is also where I went to college. It is where I lived on my own for the first time. Its where I learned to stand on my own two feet. If I stay here forever or move away this city will always have a very special place in my heart. It is also where I lived with one of my best friends who has the same crown on her foot. It was a good commemorative tattoo for this city, my friends, and the fun/crazy times we had and continue to have.

Tattoo number 3 and 4:
I go these at the same time in May 2011
The first says Mickey on the right side of my left middle finger
The other is Goofy's hat on the other side of that same finger

These are for my grandfather. Growing up I was and still am a huge Disney fan and it mostly started because of him. My grandfather means a lot to me so I decided to pay tribute to him. He gave me the nickname Mickey. He also loved Goofy. So that's pretty self explanatory. These both are not the best tattoos I have mostly because of location. I don't regret these tattoos but just wanted to point out there that I am aware of this.

Tattoo number 5
My biggest and latest tattoo. 2013

This tattoo I got for my family mainly my dads side. My grandmother loves light houses and I have been wanting a large traditional piece which is why I got it on my thigh. It's a large canvas and I just think it's a cool place. I loved the idea of a light house being the light that guides you home. It seems like a perfect metaphor for how I feel about my family. Same with the compass, its something else representing the direction my family provides me. I have a supportive family that has provided me strong people to look up to my entire life. This tattoo I drew also. I actually have the first original draft for this tattoo.

If you have the ability to draw your own tattoo I highly recommend it. Even if its just a basic drawing that can be brought to a tattoo artist to perfect. Ill talk about that more later.

My collection of skin art is continuing to grow and as it does Ill continue to update.
